Hisses, the Reticulate Python

Our local SPCA's and animal control facilities know they can call us to pick up most injured, misplaced, or orphaned wildlife. Certain segments of the animal population, though, create a sort of "no man's land" when it comes to jurisdictions. Non-native reptiles are one group of such animals. Some people who work in the front office of our local SPCA are not keen on snakes. When the drivers found a 3 foot python under someone's house, they placed it in an aquarium in the office in order to help keep it warm making the office staff a bit uneasy. The first time the snake was fed, the workers revolted and we were called in. We prefer to keep our reptiles in a large display case design rather than an aquarium.

Since Hisses moved in he has grown 4 more feet. Each snake requires an investment to house and maintain properly. We took in Hisses with the understanding that our reptile display case space and budget had reached their limits. We no longer have any facility left to house such "pets." Our overloaded circuits and non-existent wall space attests to that.

Most pythons come from Southeast Asia or Africa while Boa Constrictors, another favorite pet snake, come from Central and South America. Pythons are usually easy to identify by their distinctive markings.
