Acorn, the Screech Owl
Acorn is a screech owl native to the Sierra foothills. Unfortunately these seven-inch owls frequently get hit by cars at night along the twisting roadways. Since the road sides collect water they become lush with vegetation attracting flying insects and small rodents-both being favorite foods for these little owls.

Acorn was hit one night
causing head injuries. Thanks to the efforts of the driver, Acorn was able to
get veterinary assistance right away to avoid severe shock and encephalitis.
However, he did lose his right eye, requiring him to stay with us as a
permanent resident. He shares a cage with Squirt, another permanent screech
owl resident. They live in the director's house serenading everyone
throughout the night with a wide range of calls. They have developed a
companionship that eases the strain of captivity. |
